Weekend Preview

The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild face the potentially tricky trip to East Lancashire this Sunday 19th March when they take on the Blackburn Hawks in their penultimate game of the regular Moralee Division season – 6pm face off.

Games against Blackburn are always spicy affairs and this one has extra significance as the Wild need a win from one of their last two games to make sure of finishing in 5th place in the league table.

Blackburn still have a mathematical chance of finishing in 6th place – as opposed to their current 7th – depending on how the results go in their remaining games, so with final league positions determining the pairings in the end of season play offs - and a higher finish offering the chance of a supposedly easier draw, both teams have plenty to play for.

Of the three league meetings this season, Widnes have won 2 and Blackburn one, but all those games have been decided by a single goal margin and the last game on 15th January went to sudden death over time. Widnes, of course, won the North West Challenge Cup over two legs against the Hawks back before Christmas - losing 3-2 away and then winning 5-1 at home – and, therefore, have a narrow 3 to 2 advantage in all games this season so far.

Blackburn are currently on a bit of a roll, having won their last two games –including an impressive away victory over Whitley Warriors – while the Wild are licking their wounds after two heavy road defeats and will be keen to get back in the winning habit ready for the play offs.

Following this Sunday’s away trip, the Wild have one more regular season game left – at home to Solihull Barons on Saturday 25th March – 7pm face off. It will be a special Halton Haven night, in aid of the Runcorn based hospice, which is the Wild’s chosen charity this season.
