Weekend Preview

The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild make a rare Sunday visit north of the border this weekend to face the Solway Sharks in Dumfries in what will be their penultimate away game of the regular season (4.30pm face off).

Sharks home games are usually staged on Saturday evenings but this fixture has been moved because the league title favourites are also involved in the final of the Moralee Cup this weekend, with a two-legged tie against Billingham Stars being played on Friday and Saturday.

Widnes have already played Solway 5 times this season so far – three times in the league and twice in the cup semi final - and have yet to win a match. They did, however, take the Sharks to overtime in a narrow 3-4 home defeat back in December, after having led until the very last seconds of the game, and may feel that taking on a team who will have already played two games in two days might represent a golden opportunity to pick up a result.

Following Sunday’s game, the Wild have two more regular season fixtures – away to Blackburn on Sunday 19th March and at home to Solihull Barons on Saturday 25th March.

The following weekend has the quarter finals of the play offs pencilled in with the pairings being decided by final positions in the league table. The team that finishes in first place will play the team that finish 8th, 2nd will play 7th, 3rd will play 6th and 4th will play 5th.

As things currently stand, Widnes would meet Solihull in the two legged quarter final tie but that will all depend on the outcome of the remaining league for all the teams involved.
