Telford Wrekin Raiders 11 – DMUK Widnes Wild Women 1

The DMUK Widnes Wild women’s team lost ground at the top of the league table after an 11-1 away defeat at the hands of fellow title chasers Telford Wrekin Raiders.

Despite the one-sided scoreline, the Wild ladies didn’t, in fact, play badly and actually matched their hosts in terms of shots on goal during the game as a whole. The difference was in the finishing in front of goal and Telford took the lead after just 32 seconds of the game. The score was 5-0 at the end of the first period and 7-0 at the end of the second.

The Raiders had racked up a 10-0 lead by the time that Widnes scored their consolation goal on 57 minutes and that came from the stick of Phoebe Patient – her first goal for the club. An extra strike for the home side with 70 seconds left to play rounded off the scoring for the game.

The result sees Telford replace Widnes in 3rd place in the league table with the Wild Ladies now 4 points behind unbeaten leaders Solway Sharks, having played the same number of games. The chasing pack are still very closely matched with second placed team Leeds with 10 points from 8 games, Telford with 9 from 6 and Widnes with 8 from 6.

The Wild women are next in action on Sunday 29th January when they are away to Sheffield Shadows. They are next at home on Sunday 5th February when they take on Kingston Diamonds of Hull at Planet Ice Widnes, 4.15pm face off.
